U.S. Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz Elementary

Ortiz Elementary, opened in 2004, is named for U.S. Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz who has represented South Texans as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1982. Ortiz, the child of a migrant family, served in the Army and held law enforcement positions in Nueces County for 17 years prior to his election as a legislator. The Congressman’s Washington specialty has been both defense and border policy, having made a reputation as a fair-minded, bipartisan advocate in the spirit of service to America and South Texas. Sandra Lopez was the school’s first principal.
